I would not recommend self collection.  Anal cytology is completely different than the cervix and STI testing.  It requires more skill and training.  It is often quite uncomfortable and patients therefore might not get an appropriate sample.

IANS does not have a formal policy position, but I think that it’s fair to say that the gold standard is clinician collected and I think that this is what most experts would recommend.

At this time, it is not recommended for individuals to self-collect anal cytology due to lack of efficacy data. There are ongoing studies to determine if this is a viable recommendation.  One possibility is that thorough patient education and explanation on collection could make this an option in the future, but this is to be determined.

Does IANS have a formal position on the recommendation for patient vs provider collected anal cytology? I know that our practice has historically relied on self-collection, but after the number of unsatisfactory specimens, I have begun collecting myself and have not had any unsatisfactory specimens.
